History of art from off the top of my head. Let’s set something straight. If all the time you have is devoted to survival then you have no time for art.
I’m talking about rising in the morning and working until you drop. In the course of human history, that’s the way many people lived. If you struggled every waking hour against a ruthless environment then before your head crashed on the bears skin rug you had no time at night to debate who had a greater impact on pop music, Elvis or Michael Jackson.
So art is a product of leisure.
A great expression of this is Greek Mythology. Imagine being a shepherd around 3000 BC. Keeping wolves and thieves away from your wooly friends was an important trust. But come on, it wasn’t a high energy occupation.
So you are sitting on the grass with a canopy of stars in the dark blue sky. The sheep are crunching away and getting fat and concentrating on growing a future leisure suit for you to wear to the Shepard’s festival. What do you do?
You make up stories. These stars make up a bull and this set is an archer. Is there an architect for this? After years of careful thought and confiding in other sheep herders, yu decide, yes. And he has a long gray beard and carries a thunderbolt.
In the Greek tradition, as in the traditions of many cultures, story manufacture and the telling of, became mankind’s first art form. All this from some illiterate Greek shepherd who maybe drank too much wine.
